學測中翻英高分突破：關鍵詞語解析與翻譯技巧

下列九個大考「中譯英」考古題出現過的詞語或句子，如果你全部都會，那你具備學測14~15級分實力。會七個，程度在12~13級分之間；五個，大概落在9~11級分的區間；三個，則是7~8級分。一個，5~6級分；萬一通通都不會，恐怕可以考慮放棄學測了！

1. 帶給人們會心的一笑
   give/bring people a knowing smile
   = cause people to smile knowingly
   = make people smile knowingly
   ☆ knowing 明瞭的
   = understanding 了解的
   = approving 贊同的
   ☆ 注意下列與「笑」有關的慣用語：
   1. beam at sb./sth. 對…眉開眼笑 (v.)
   2. grin at sb. 對…裂嘴笑 (v.)
   3. have a broad/big grin on one's face 笑得合不攏嘴 (v.)
   4. have a sheepish grin on one's face 靦腆地笑 (v.)
   5. smile/laugh unknowingly 不自覺地笑 (v.)
   6. giggle 格格笑/傻笑 (v./n.)
   7. stifle a giggle 忍住不笑 (v.)
   8. get the giggles 傻笑個不停 (v.)
   9. beam/grin/smile from ear to ear 笑得合不攏嘴 (v.)
   10. burst into laughter 放聲大笑 (v.) = burst out laughing
   
   
2. 刺激買氣的成長
   stimulate the growth of sales
   ☆ stimulate 刺激
   = promote 促進
   = boost 提振
   ☆ 「買氣」不能按照中文直接翻譯，sales = 銷售量
   
   
3. 交通法規必須嚴格執行
   Traffic regulations have to be strictly enforced. = Traffic rules must be enforced strictly.
   ☆ 「執行法律/法規」的「執行」只能用enforce，不能用carry out / conduct / perform / execute。
   ☆ 搭配詞慣用語：
   (1) enforce the law 執行法律
   (2) carry out an experiment 進行實驗
   (3) conduct an operation 執行手術
   (4) perform a mission 執行任務
   (5) execute a plan 進行計畫
   ☆ 結論：
   1. 執行法律只能用enforce。
   2. 執行/進行其它任何事情則可以用 carry out = conduct = perform = execute
   
   
4. 玉山覆蓋著厚厚的積雪
   Jade Mountain is covered with/in thick players of snow. = Mt. Jade is blanketed with/in thick players of snow.
   ☆ 積雪的「積」，馬上會想到「累積」這個字：accumulate/accumulation。
   其實，道地的英文是說「層層的雪」：players of snow。因為厚厚的積雪是冬季幾個月的時間裡，下過好幾場雪，每下過一場雪，就覆蓋上一層新的雪，就這樣層層堆疊而成為「厚厚的積雪」。
   ☆ blanket 毯子 (n.) 覆蓋 (vt.)
   
   
5. 把獲利當作最主要的目標
   see making profit as the major goal = think profit-making (to be) the major aim
   ☆ see/look on/view/take/treat/think of/refer to/perceive A as B = think/consider/believe/deem A (to be) B
   把A視為/當作B
   ☆ 「最主要的目標」，答案為何不是the most major goal呢？因為，major這個形容詞沒有比較級或最高級，這是英語的慣用和邏輯。
   像這樣的形容詞還有：
   1. unique 獨特的
   2. extreme 極端的
   3. favorite 最喜歡的
   4. absolute 絕對的
   5. perfect 完美的
   6. correct 正確的
   7. wrong 錯誤的
   8. basic 基礎的
   9. alone 孤單的
   分析上列這些沒有比較級或最高級的形容詞，可以得出以下結論。凡是表達
   (1) 唯一：unique, alone
   (2) 絕對：absolute, correct, wrong
   (對就是對，錯就是錯，中間沒有灰色地帶，所以被歸類為絕對)
   (3) 極致：extreme, perfect, basic
   (基礎basic是位於最底的概念，所以被歸類為極致。)
   (完美perfect已經是100分了，故也具有極致的含意。)
   
   
6. 推出新的政策
   launch a new policy
   ☆ launch = introduce
   launch 發射；展開；推出 (vt.)
   ☆ 搭配詞慣用語：
   (1) launch a rocket 發射一枚火箭
   (2) launch an anti-drug campaign 發起反毒運動
   (3) launch a legal investigation 展開司法調查
   (4) launch a new project 推出新企畫案
   (5) launch a new product 推出新的產品
   (6) launch a new album 推出新的專輯
   
   
7. 交通工具
   a means of transportation/transport
   ☆ mean除了當動詞，解釋成「意思是；意味著」之外，也可以當名詞，但一定要加S，單數與複數形一樣。
   有兩個意思：
   (1) 方法 = way = method (2) 財富 = wealth
   不過要特別注意的是，交通工具不能說a tool of transportation/transport，而是說a means of transportation/transport，這是習慣問題。
   ☆ 搭配詞慣用語：
   (1) by means of + N/Ving 藉由…方法
   (2) a means of cooking 一種烹飪的方法
   (3) a means of communication 一種通訊的方法
   (4) a woman of means 一個有錢的女人
   (5) have the means to buy sth 有錢可買下…
   例句
   1. He achieved his goal by means of working hard. (他藉由努力的方式達成他的目標。)
   2. Stir-frying is a means of Chinese cooking. (翻炒是中華烹飪的一種方式。)
   3. There is no means of communication in the mountain. (在這山中沒有通訊的方法。)
   4. The young man married a woman of means. (這小夥子娶了一名富婆。)
   5. He had the means to buy that mansion. (他可以砸錢買下那棟豪宅。)
   
   
8. 一般人都知道
   people generally know that S V
   = It is generally known that S V
   = It is common knowledge that S V
   ☆ 很多考生的答案是：ordinary people all know或common people all know，這就是典型的中式英文。generally是「普遍地」，generally know就是「普遍 都知道」，而is generally known意思是「普遍被知道」。
   ☆ knowledge除了解釋成「知識」，也有「知道」的意思。例如He did that without my knowledge.(他做那件事我不知情)。至於common則是「一般的；常見的；普通的」意思。
   ☆ 次處的It是虛主詞，而that S V則是名詞子句當真主詞。
   
   
9. 人類對外太空所知有限
   Humans have (a) limited knowledge of outer space. = Human beings have (a) limited knowledge of outer space.
   ☆ knowledge解釋成「知識」或「知道」，可以當可數名詞或不可數名詞。
   limited 受到限制的，是過去分詞(P.P.)當形容詞用，修飾knowledge。意思就是：知識是受到限制的。
   ☆ 這題考了「外太空」，因此可以推論以下詞語也很有可能被拿來考。
   (1) a planet 行星
   (2) the solar system 太陽系
   (3) the earth's orbit 地球的軌道
   (4) inter-planet travel 星際旅行
   (5) an astronaut 太空人
   (6) space walk 太空漫步

秘訣 (二)：不要死背單字，而要有系統背搭配詞。
