大多數人學英語，看到except與besides，就把中文背起來「除了之外」。其實，這兩個迥然不同。except表一個集合裡面的例外，比方說，大家都喜歡唱歌，除了我不喜歡。大家是一個集合，我就是一個例外。Everybody, except me, enjoys singing.。

至於besides則是除了已經提過的之外，還有其它別的。例如，除了週二之外，週六我也要上學。Besides Tuesday, I also have to go to school on Saturday.。

簡單的說，except後面的受詞是例外，是被排出在外的；而besides後面的受詞是跟其它的一樣，同屬一個集合或同一類的。注意：besides除了當介詞之外，也可以當副詞，意思是「此外；不只如此」，通常放句首。
